A woman currently accused of a MySpace hoax, which allegedly caused a 13-year old girl to commit suicide, will likely be denied the option of presenting evidence. The US District judge informed the lawyers he intends to exclude the evidence from the trial. The accused, Lori Drew, is accused of using a fake profile on MySpace to drive Megan Meier, her daughter’s prior friend, to hang herself.

Drew pleaded not guilty to 1 count of conspiracy and 3 counts of accessing computers without authorization. Drew is being prosecuted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, this being the first time it’s used this way  regarding the site’s terms of service barring misrepresentation by users.

According to prosecutors, Drew helped create a flse identity on Myspecad and harassed Meier with cruel messages. Meier subsequent was treated for depression and committed suicide after receiving messages saying the world would better off without her.

Drew’s lawyer stated that cyber-bullying isn’t a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, normally used to prosecute hackers and hitch tech criminals. The jury for the trial will begin the selection process on November 18.

Google’s On-Demand Indexing for Online Businesses

November 13th, 2008 | Posted in web news

Google is making another attempt to gain market share for enterprise applications. On Thursday, the company launched another feature to help companies that use its Site Search to instantly add and update their website pages.

The new empahasis on accuracy, comprehensiveness, and speed is based on the fact that Web users expect to have access to the newest information a website has to offer. Google will do so by creating spcial indexes for supplementary pages beyond what the search engine already added to its database.

Google calls this feature On-Demand Indexing and will ensure specifically the newest pages will appear for a given company’s website. Businesses will have control on what is added to the index when it comes to new content with an ‘index now’ button which would then quickly update the search results.

Other features available for business integration are the options to turn off ads, a more custom design as well as email and phone support.

Google is hosting Site Search on its network and planning for it to be a big success in the future. The company charges $100 a year for small sites and up to several thousand dollars per year for large sites. Currently Microsoft is more of a dominant player in the enterprise search market but Google is beginning to handle large volumes of information for companies as well.
